"Save The Children" is a non-governmental organization that actively works to improve the surrounding environment of the world's children and their families. "Save The Children" are partnered up with independent organizations from 27 countries all over the world. They make the best use of the world's largest international network and develop activities in more than 120 countries. "Save the Children" follow the principles of United Nation's "Convention on the Rights of the Child".
"Save The Children" was founded in the United Kingdom in 1919. The founder Eglantyne Jebb famous for his quote: "I have no enemies under the age of 11" started the activity to save the children who lost their houses in World War I, were hurt or orphaned. The ideas of "Save The Children" spread throughout the world and at the moment, the activity is developing in more than 120 countries with the help of its worldwide network.
From a neutral standpoint, the activities are for all the children across the world where ethnicity nor religion are not being distinguished. Our activities focus on the underprivileged children who do no have the basic social environment such as education and healthcare, especially from poverty and conflict.
Our activities cannot separate the environment surrounding the children parents, family and the local community. For example, even if the children want to go to school, the parents cannot understand the need for education instead forcing them to help at home and do not allow them to go to school. In addition, the cultural background may not always allow for girls to receive an education. In order for the activity support to have long lasting effects, we along with the adults strive to improve the children's surrounding environment.
For the people in the countries that are being supported, to depend their life on the activity support forever is not a healthy condition. What is important is not the result of the duration of the activity, but whether the activity can achieve to continue future development. Our role is to support so that the people from the community can continue the activity even after the support from "Save The Children" finishes.
"Save The Children" supports in a way where the people from the community play a central role. For example, in a school construction, firstly, a committee participated by school officials and community residence is set up. In the committee they discuss what kinds of schools are necessary and they also bear part of the construction fee and material costs. It takes more time than to construct it with only the fund from Save The Children, but by creating awareness for the people during the activity, it is expected that the quality of education will improve even after the completion of the construction project.
Part of the profit from bananas and grapefruits are donated to "Save The Children Japan Cooperation", making the donation useful for the children from The Philippines, which is also the production area of bananas.
The project focuses on strengthening regional policies to promote children's rights. Specifically, at the moment, "Save The Children" is carrying out a project that supports education to improve literacy rate and education in healthcare, listening to the voices of the children. It promotes improvement in accessibly to service such as education or medical care in order to meet children's basic needs.
